Day Trips

Within 100 miles of the site is Lassen Volcanic National Park and Burney-McArther State Park, both easily driven to from Adin via Hwy 299 W & Hwy 89.
Lassen Volcanic Nat'l Park is home to some of the best day trip hiking in the north state. Try the 3.5 mile (rt) day hike to Bumpass Hell, an active volcanic area complete with fumeroles and boiling mudpots. The new visitor's center at the southwest entrance is worth the drive up over the 8000' high summit road to see. Along the way stop and see the expanding mudpot at Sulphur Works, which is in the process of taking over the park road!
Day hikes to Paradise Meadows, Kings Creek or Terrace Lakes will introduce you to the alpine beauty that is Lassen.
Also very fun is the kayak rental at Manzanita Lake at the Hwy 44 entrance. $10 hr gets you a fun time on the water. Both singles and doubles (for families) are available.
Just outside of Lassen's northern entrance on Hwy 44 is Subway Caves, a completely hikeable lava tube that's cool and very, very dark. (You think the skies at GSSP are dark - try this!)
In Old Station on Hwy 89 is the newly opened Spatter Cone Trail, an easy loop hike which visits several "spatter cones" left by volcanic activity of the past. Dip your feet into the rushing Hat Creek just across the parking lot.
In Hat Creek you can visit the Hat Creek Radio Observatory, home of UC Berkeley's Radio Astronomy Dept and SETI's new Allen Array. There is a small visitors' center and a self-guided tour. Open only during the weekdays, so visit their website (search for Hat Creek Radio Obs or UC Berkeley Radio Astro Dept) for details.
At Burney Falls State Park, get out of your car and walk the 1.5 mi loop trail which takes you past one of the best California waterfalls. A great way to cool off on a hot summer's day!
Pacific Crest Trail crosses Hwy 299 near Sandpit Road between Burney and Fall River Mills. Go north on it to Lake Britton and Burney Falls, south to Hat Creek Powerhouse #2.
Spouse want something more civilized? Go up Hwy 89 to McCloud or Mt. Shasta City. Boutiques and good places to eat abound in the shadow of Mt. Shasta. Visit the three McCloud River Loop waterfalls along the way on Hwy 89 N.
Across Hwy 229 from GSSP is the Ash Creek Wildlife Reserve, a great binocular place for birders.
Fall River, Hat Creek and Pitt River are paradise for fishermen.
Got kids? The municipal swimming pools in Bieber and Burney should be open to the public that week.
Great food can be gottn at Adin General Supply and the Oney Frosty in Adin, Kathy's in Bieber, and Mayfly Pub (open for families) in Fall River Mills.
Biy Valley (where GSSP is located) is holding their annual Big Valley Days that weekend, so there will also be a lot of activiites in town to while away the day.
There's a lot of stuff to do around here. Bring a kite and join in the kite flying at the star party most afternoons.
Or, just veg
After a long break from Fly Fishing I'm itching to dip my line again, there are some really great Fly Fishing opportunities around the area, I love to hook up with some Fly Fishers for some stream time. Or even first timers, I would be thrilled to share my limited knowledge and skills with some newbies!!!
So if your interested let me know I am definetly going to get some stream time this year. Maybe even some tubing on Baum Lake!
My wife and I are planning to do some fishing while we're up there. We just got our first fly setup, so we'll be certified nimrods.
Mary seems to be a natural at casting. I'm planning on a fair amount of practice in the back yard.
Cheers,
Dave Ambrose
Don't worry to much about your casting you'll get it.
Once you've caught a trout on a fly rod nothing else will ever do:-)
Clear Skies and Riffles!
