Dark Sky Observing and Etiquette

That is an excellent question and I'll give you one (of many) answers. In general, when organizing a large event, we need to be sensitive to a whole range of things that may annoy people. Alot of people want to use generators and everyone hates hearing them, so we restrict their use to one section of the field. Others want to drive back to their hotel late at night, so we require that they park well outside the observing area. It turns out that many of our most notable observers and imagers simply deplore green laser pointers because they find them either distracting while observing or damaging to their work while imaging. The extent to which this is true is very much in the eye of the beholder; but we really need to keep the observing environment as unobtrusive as possible to fulfill our event's goal of providing dark skies. Green laser pointers are very cool... I own one myself; however, I can just as easily show someone the location of an object through my telrad, or guide them through a star-hop. They're really useful during public events, but there are clear alternatives; and when it comes to keeping our attendees happy, it's human nature that one negative outweighs ten positives.
